Creative Voice - Negative Stereotypes
Why Now? Over the past 3 years there has been a significant increase in the number of gang related incidents including 6 fatalities and multiple stabbings and/or shootings in Sheffield.
'Creative Voice' is a group of 35 talented, artistic young people who have used their creative skills to explore gang culture and challenge negative stereotyping. Their mission was to make other young people aware of the dangers of gangs and to explore how young people have had direct experience of being in a gang. Others wanted to share their feelings about how the presence of gangs in their neighbourhoods makes them feel unsafe and afraid.
Over the summer of 2010 'Creative Voice' produced two short films, two radio programmes and a magazine of comic art work. The young people were from very different communities in Sheffield and through the project formed strong friendships and creative partnerships, which will go on into the future.
